On-Premises Rules & Prohibited Activities
Maine law establishes strict requirements for on-premises conduct at cannabis retail establishments. These rules must be followed by all customers and staff.
MRS Title 28-B, §507; §508(3)(B); §509
Prohibited
- No consumption on the premises. Customers may not use any cannabis products anywhere on the property. §508(3)(B)
- No unaccompanied minors. Persons under 21 may enter only when accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or custodian. §507
- No sales to visibly intoxicated individuals. Refuse transactions for anyone appearing under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other intoxicants. §504(2)(D)
- No free samples or giveaways. All cannabis must be sold in compliant, tracked transactions.
- No public display outside the premises. Cannabis may not be openly displayed or consumed in public areas. §1501(2)
Required
- Display current license. The active license must be prominently posted. §509
- Verify age for every customer. Check valid photo ID before any product discussion. §504(4)(A)
- Use child-resistant packaging. All products must leave in compliant, sealed packaging. §701(2)(A)
- Maintain security systems. Cameras and security devices must remain operational during business hours.
- Display employee identification. Staff must wear or display required identification at all times.
Regarding persons under 21 years of age:
- Minors may enter only when accompanied by their parent, legal guardian, or custodian.
- Minors must remain with the supervising adult at all times.
- Minors may not handle cannabis or cannabis products.
- Employees must verify the relationship between the minor and accompanying adult.
Post this notice conspicuously at all entrances and within the retail area.
